Mentally challenged woman raped in Mumbai suburb

MUMBAI: An 18-year-old mentally challenged woman, missing from her suburban home for a week, was traced on Wednesday and found to have been raped. Diagnosed to have the mental development of a seven-year-old, it was the fourth occasion in three years when the woman went missing and was raped.

The police registered a case of rape against a person and said they would arrest him shortly. Police officials said they had repeatedly urged the woman’s mother to admit her to a home for mental health patients where she could be better cared for but her family refused to do so.


The woman resides with her parents and siblings in a slum. A psychological evaluation at a superspecialty hospital showed that her mental age was seven years and she suffered from “moderate mental retardation”.


On November 15, she went missing from home. Her family looked for her and eventually filed a missing complaint.


The police learnt she had been spotted in Malwani. She alleged she had been raped and the police took her to a public hospital for a medical examination.
