AHMEDABAD: Even as Patidar agitationists in Gujarat are capitalizing on Marathas in Maharashtra to boost their chances of OBC quota, the community is looking towards its brethren all over India to win a marriage quota.
In fact, the Gujarat Pradesh Kurmi Kshtriya Mahasabha (GPKKM) is hosting families of daughters from Kurmis (farm peasant and land owning community like Patidars) from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha in Ahmedabad to help boost chances of Patidar boys find brides.
The marital rendezvous between 5,000 boys from Patel families in Gujarat and 200 girls from the three states will culminate in a mega-mass marriage ceremony between January 4 and 7 at Hardas Bapu Ni Wadi in Bapunagar.
Organizers say the four-state union is prompted by severely skewed sex ratio amongst Patidars in the state. "Our internal surveys reveal there are less than 700 girls per 1,000 boys in the community. Ironically, development claims its biggest casualty in daughters. Economically progressive states like Gujarat reel under skewed sex ratio while girl's population is more robust in backward states. It is time we started 'roti and beti' relationship between Kurmis across India," said Patel.
