NOIDA: A 22-year-old youth allegedly shot at his girlfriend and then committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in a room of an OYO guest house in Sector 63.

The girl, who suffered a bullet injury to the chest, has been admitted to Safdarjung hospital. Police said employees of the guest house where the couple had put up, Terenne Empire, broke open the door of their room after hearing a gunshot and shouts of help.

The guest house employees found the youth hanging from the ceiling fan.

The girl had locked herself in the bathroom and refused to open. A little later, she managed to come out of the window, get into the balcony and enter the adjacent room.

The youth was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital while the girl was sent to Delhi when her condition deteriorated. Police have identified the youth as Mohit, who was from Bulandshahr, while the girl, Neha, is a resident of Ghaziabad. Both were studying in KD Campus institute in Ghaziabad.

According to police, Mohit and Neha had checked into the guest house around 10am on Thursday and took a room on the second floor.

Circle officer Rajiv Kumar Singh said they had booked the room through the OYO website.

“They knew each other for quite some time as they studied in the same institute. The boy had come with a pistol, which suggests he had planned to murder the girl,” Singh added. The youth’s body has been sent for an autopsy and the reports are awaited.

Sources said the guest house employees had heard shouts of quarrel coming from inside the room before the shot was fired. “When the hotel staff broke the door open, the found the youth hanging and the bathroom door locked from inside. The girl did not open the door. She somehow managed to come out of the window to the balcony and get into another room,” said Sanath Mishra, a sub-inspector at Chijjarshi chowki.

Neha’s father Jaidir Singh, who owns a grocery in Bulandhshr, said the family had no idea about Mohit. “Every day, Neha left for her classes around 9am and came back around 1pm. On Thursday too, she left home at the same time. We came to know about the incident around 1.30pm,” the father said. “My child is in the ICU and is very serious. Doctors are trying to save her. We can only pray for her at this time,” he added.

Sources in the police said the guest house was not registered under the Sarai Act, 1867.

TOI contacted an OYO spokesperson and asked him why the guest house was on the company’s platform despite not being registered. He refused to answer the question and cut the call.

On Wednesday, the district administration had issued notices to an OYO-registered hotel in Jhundpura as well as the room aggregator for operating in the city without registration.
