JD(S) directs Mathew T Thomas to quit; Krishnankutty to be new minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Janata Dal(S) national leadership has asked party nominee in the Kerala cabinet, Mathew T Thomas, to quit immediately. JD(S) nominated Chittoor MLA K Krishnankutty as the new representative of the party to the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet.


“I have conveyed the decision of party leadership to Mathew T Thomas. He happily accepted the decision. Our recommendation has been communicated to LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan and CM Pinarayi Vijayan also”, JD(S) secretary general Danish Anil told reporters in Bengaluru on Friday afternoon.


JD(S) parliamentary party leader C K Nanoo, MLA and state president K Krishnankutty met party all India president H D Deve Gowda on Friday morning and pressed for the removal of Mathew T Thomas. Though Gowda had asked Thomas, the third MLA of the party in the state, also to join Friday’s meeting, he chose to skip it citing committed engagements.


Danish Ali said the change of guard is in tune with the agreement among the leadership regarding rotation of ministerial berth taken in 2016 when the LDF government assumed office.


Mathew T Thomas who is handing Water Resources is one of the best performing ministers in the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet. He had meticulously handled the drought of 2017 and has been instrumental in initiating visionary irrigation and water supply projects in the state. “Mathew T Thomas has done a tremendous job in the last two and a half years. Krishnankutty is a senior leader too”, said Danish Ali.
