The plane, with 249 passengers onboard, was at the Beijing airport when technical snag was reported with the hydraulics and required a new pump. However, the Beijing airport staff refused to go ahead with the repairs as they would not accept a bank transfer and insisted on cash only.
After the passengers collectively paid for the repairs, it took 10 hours for the plane to be repaired before it could safely take-off. A passenger Daniel Golebiowski said, “We are at the international airport. I cannot believe that transactions take place here in cash under the table with the mechanic standing next to the plane. Incredible.”
Speaking on the issue the airline’s spokesman, Adrian Kubicki said, “I know that you encountered an unusual situation today, for which I would like to apologise for from the bottom of my heart. Believe it nor not, but there was a situation with a warehouse employee in Beijing who refused all methods of payment other than cash which led to the confusion.” Kubicki added, “There are no circumstances that justify asking money from passengers. The worker who asked passengers for money will face disciplinary action.”
Passengers, who gave money for the repairs, were reimbursed when they arrived in Warsaw and given vouchers as compensation for the delay.
