Pitso: The PSL title race is like the Comrades Marathon

2018-11-22 10:59

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes his side have the experience and pedigree to retain the Absa Premiership trophy as they have the stamina to compete.

Sundowns are currently fourth on the log standings with 18 points though they have three games in hand over leaders Orlando Pirates, who are on 23 points.

The Brazilians remain the only unbeaten side in South Africa's top flight in 2018/19 and appear to be in prime position to mount a successful defence of their title.

Nonetheless, Mosimane expressed confidence about his team's chances likening the title race to taking part in the Comrades Marathon where often a runner comes from behind to win the 90-kilometre spectacle.

He said: "We know how to win the championship league. We have big experience in the championship league.

"We know how to win it. We know when it is going to open. It is like the Comrades, it's a marathon. Somebody can take the lead and you sit behind and wait.

"You make sure you are not out from the leading position."

Sundowns will resume their league campaign on November 28 against SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

However, they are in action before then as they face Equatorial Guinea's Leones Vegetarianos in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League on Wednesday.

In team news, midfielders Aubrey Ngoma and Andile Jali are said to be making good progress in their recovery from injury.
