ANC a trojan force in our constitutional democracy

22 November 2018, 09:22  - Vivi Mpikashe

Anyone, be it a conglomerate or ordinary gang, and indeed all types of predators, who wants to steal state resources uses the fastest but safest means, the ANC, as their Trojan Horse. For the uninitiated a Trojan Horse is a means that appears to be genuine but actually a ruse.

If anyone doubts this altruism look no further than the ANC‘s chequered history since 1994. Its character, its cadres and worst of all leaders. The period 1994-2008 can be classified as the lull before the tsunami of pillaging. Before a coterie of barbarians in the Trojan horse unleashes their demonic prowess to hollow the country from 2009 to 14 February 2018. The question historians and political analysts will ever grapple with is how have we come to lend in this hot socio-economic mess we are in today where our national debt to our GDP is over 50%, youth unemployment  and poverty at 38.2% and 53.2% respectively.

Inflation is so high that it has effectively rendered the poor majority’s buying power simply hopeless and helpless. How come we have so many dysfunctional institutions in all the spheres of government thanks to the brazen looting and yet not a single minister, DG or any thief of note is serving time?

To simply blame all this detritus on Jacob Zuma alone is at best trite but at worst disingenuous. Granted, Zuma is the chief arch-villain but he has many supporting villains within the ANC. Despite the raging Ramaphoria, the rot is beyond Ramaphosa and anyone else within the ANC.

The organization is so swamped with thieves that they deliberately elect corrupt leaders and allow them, especially its president, to be feudal chiefs dispensing patronage willy-nilly to their lickspittles. The latter then raid the fiscus without expecting any kind of punishment either from their organization or law enforcement agencies. The VBS heist is the latest case in point and is the tip of an iceberg. The skeletons (not smallanyana) tumbling out of Zondo Commission attest to a hollowed organization in a sea of monumental corruption.

Indisputably we are in this political and economic malaise because voters of Mzansi so trust and are so captured by the ANC that they can’t see the bluff of "better life for all". In fact, it is the "best life for a few". So blind and suffocated are they that they are unaware of the lethal weapon in their hand to deal with brigands—the vote.

As South Africans we must deal a hard blow to this kleptocracy that denies our children a place in the sun. It is our emotional inclination as voters to keep on voting thieves though we know their pilfering ways that keeps us slaves to miserable poverty. The most celebrated African anti-corruption activist, P.L.O Lumumba warns us:

"Because what we do is to elect thieves. We elect hyenas to take care of goats and when the goats are consumed we wonder why."

A party that has no political will to expose and purge criminals as its members let alone its leaders is nothing but mafia. The desecration of our constitutional democracy resulting in wanton disregard of the rule of law and political accountability is high treason.

The solution is judicious use of our voting power.  Let us vote for a party that will take genuine care of our interests. Yes, a party that will genuinely uphold the rule of law to the letter and defend our constitutional democracy at all costs. A party that will never steal from us as the poor majority and then spit in our face is a sine qua non for our nascent democracy. Having a strong opposition is the most viable bulwark against malfeasances of and authoritarianism by a governing party.
