BAGHDAD—Relations between Kurdish leaders and Iraq’s new government are warming, a rapprochement between two U.S. allies that could help stabilize the country as it tackles challenges in the wake of the war against Islamic State.
On Thursday, Masoud Barzani, the former president of Iraq’s semiautonomous Kurdish region, met here with Iraq’s Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, the latest sign that the Kurds and Iraqis are overcoming deep friction after being on the brink of civil war just a year ago.
