CHENNAI: The well-marked low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring intermittent heavy rain in the city on Thursday.
The first spell of northeast monsoon for the city started on Tuesday afternoon. Though the city received only 25mm rain since Tuesday afternoon till Wednesday morning, the intensity of the shower increased on Wednesday. The Met recorded 35mm rain since 8.30am on Wednesday.
A forecast for Thursday says, “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Intermittent heavy rain or thundershower is likely to occur. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 25°C and 23°C.” The suburbs are expected to receive more rain.
Weather blogger Pradeep John said rain and accompanied wind would be experienced in southern suburbs like ECR and Siruseri while the core city will get steady rains. The city would experience weather like that in Ooty.
“We can expect some increase in intensity at night / morning. The pattern of steady rain to continue in Chennai till tomorrow noon,” he said in a post.
“The clouds stayed outside Chennai for good 12 hours without moving. Twelve precious hours lost and all the rain was dumped in the sea so close to our city and now the clouds parked off Chennai coast start to move in and reports are that its very windy in ECR / Siruseri region. As we go into the night, other places of the city shall also get steady rain. This will be the pattern tomorrow too.”
Meanwhile, collectors of Chennai and Kanchipuram have declared a holiday for schools and colleges in view of the rain forecast. The University of Madras and TN Dr Amedkar Law University have postponed examinations scheduled on Thursday.
