I was really shattered to read of the closure of Macrorie House Museum.
I was curator there during the 1990s. At that time closure of the Museum was discussed and we had to go all out to save the museum. I think the late Ruth Gordon, our Chairman of the Board, Graham Dominy and many interested Pietermaritzburg people were delighted when The Simon Van Der Stel foundation were willing to help.
We had the usual soirees, a show put on by Meryl Kurs, Garrison Gayities, flowers through the House, the making of films, Magic Lantern shows, etc. and we managed to stay open.
I was quite willing, as I loved my job so much to work for next to nothing. I am staggered by the fact that certain elements of society could find it 'fun' to destroy part of the Heritage of South Africa from whatever era it comes. I have a lot of photos and newspaper cuttings as well as a video from SABC about the famous ghosts!
Please keep in touch and if I can help in any way do not hesitate to contact me.
Kindest regards
