The report says a low-cost streaming dongle could broaden the appeal of the company’s upcoming streaming service, which is expected to go live sometime next year.
It’s still not confirmed whether or not Apple has decided to pursue a low-cost streaming dongle. At the moment, Apple does offer a streaming box in the form of Apple TV, priced at $149 (or approx Rs 10,590) for the non-4K variant and $179 (or approx Rs 12,772) with 4K support. Current-generation TV dongles from Google and Amazon are priced around $35 (or approx Rs 2,487) in the market.
Speculation is rife that Apple is working on a video streaming service that will rival the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Rumour has it that Apple has sanctioned about $1 billion to develop original content. In October, CNBC reported that Apple will make the original content free for those who own an iPhone or iPad.
Major Hollywood actors Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have been signed to star in a new show. The Cupertino company has reportedly signed Steven Spielberg’s production company for a Sci-fi show. And that’s not all. Apple has also signed a deal with Oprah Winfrey’s company to develop original shows. Then there’s M. Night Shyamalan, who has has been roped in to produce an untitled psychological thriller. Apple is also negotiating with HBO, ShowTime, and Starz to offer these services on its yet-to-launch streaming platform.
