For many Australians, four weeks of annual workplace leave is simply not enough.
Thankfully, with some careful planning around public holidays, you may be able to turn 17 days of scheduled leave into 45 days of holidays in 2019.
According to Insure and Go, the biggest leave gain to be made in 2019 is by booking leave around Christmas. With seven days of leave, it's possible to create a 17 day break here.

This is because Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day are all mid-week public holidays
Schedule annual leave for 20th, 23rd and 24th of December as well as 27th December and again on 30th and 31st and 3rd of January.
Your next big opportunity for a major break falls around Easter.
Next year, the Easter long weekend will be from Friday 19 April to Monday 22 April in all States, with Anzac Day following just two days later on Thursday 25 April.
With two public holidays occurring in one week, you can extend your holiday to 10 days – from Friday 19 April to Sunday 28 April inclusive – just by taking three days of annual leave.

If you are considering a mid-year break, plan a vacation around the May public holidays.
The hack, which only applies to residents in Queensland and the Northern Territory, extends out the Easter Break by including a May 6 public holiday.
Taking leave from Friday 19 April to Monday May 6 gives you a sweet 18 days off work to travel abroad with just eight days of annual leave off work.
