First there was the dip-dye, and then came balayage.

Now 'espresso' hair has become the latest trend to sweep hairdressers across the country.

The colour, inspired by the coffee of the same name, has long been championed by celebrities from Bella Hadid to Selena Gomez, but in recent months it has begun to trickle down to mainstream salons.

However, don't be fooled by the deceptively simple hue; it's actually a complex layers of several different shades of brown.

Indeed, the complex hue has been hailed by experts as the 'autumnal alternative' to popular colour treatment balayage.

Bella Hadid was an early adopter of espresso hair, first rocking the look during a working trip to Korea in October 2017.

Since then, everyone from Selena Gomez to Chrissy Teigen and Dakota Johnson has jumped on the bandwagon.

Chris Williams, international colour director at Rush Hair, told MailOnline: 'This colour technique is perfect for taking autumnal looks into winter, with the goal of cooler, mocha tones with a darker base.
