Thousands flock to Pilar to seek Ven Agnelo’s blessings

PANAJI: Venerable Agnelo D’Souza is a shining star of the Church of Goa and he preached the Gospel through his holy life and is a model of holiness, archbishop of Delhi, Anil Couto, said on Tuesday.
He was delivering the homily at the high mass to mark the 91st death anniversary of venerable D’Souza in a pandal outside Pilar church on Tuesday.
The death anniversary of the Anjuna-born priest was celebrated with great fervour and devotion, as thousands flocked to Pilar hillock to seek his blessings.
While Couto presided over the solemn Eucharistic celebration, there were masses from 5.30am and a few in the evening on Tuesday. Fr Tony Fernandes, vice-postulator of the cause of venerable Agnelo de Souza, while thanking the archbishop, mentioned that the beatification process is gaining momentum and that everybody needs to pray unceasingly.
Superior general of the society of Pilar, Fr Sebastiao Mascarenhas, sfx, said that Venerable Agnelo is an attractive person for our times because he embodies inclusiveness, peace and forgiveness, which are the values of our Indian culture.
At the end of the Eucharist, central delegate superior of Pilar, Fr Nazareth Fernandes, thanked all those involved, especially government officials, MLAs and ministers, who rendered their services and cooperation and made the celebration a meaningful one.
During the nine-day novena period from November 11 to 19, masses were celebrated with specific themes and purpose. A night vigil on November 16. to pray for the early canonization of venerable Agnelo, was conducted by the Pilar retreat team and Pota retreat team.
On November 17, a special mass for the sick was celebrated. They were prayed over and were anointed with oil. During the novena, every Eucharist was followed by a Novena prayer and prayer over the sick. Favours received through the intercession of Venerable Agnelo were announced. The devotees prayed near the tomb and were allowed to kiss the sacred relic of the cassock of Venerable Agnelo.
