Anna Nagar Fifth Avenue, one of the important links for motorists and drivers from Koyambedu and Tirumangalam to reach New Avadi Road, has been reduced into an unofficial one-way route for the last few months, as the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board dug up the stretch to lay drainage pipes.

Temporary stretch made to cover the dug up road on fifth avenue in Anna Nagar
Chennai:
Sources alleged that CMWSSB has not yet re-laid the road even after completing the works. Worsening the situation, the public and residents of the area use either sides of the road to park their vehicles. The commuters now try and make their way on the narrow road.
The 50-feet road could easily be an alternative to reduce the congestion on the Second Avenue Road connecting Tirumangalam to Anna Nagar rountana.
However, the poor condition of the road force vehicles to add to the congestion on the main road. Also, since the monsoon has begun, motorists worry if the situation would get worse.
Annamalai, an auto driver who picks and drops school children, said that if the roads are in good condition, traffic can be controlled.
“Since there has not been much rain until now, the residents are not affected yet. They will know the impact after a downpour. Last week, a motorist died after his skidded and went under an MTC bus. It would be good if the authorities concerned lay the road before something similar happens again,” he added.
When contacted, Executive Engineer of Zone 8 of Greater Chennai Corporation said that CMWSSB, which dug up the roads to lay sewage pipeline, did not complete the work owing to the onset of monsoon.
“Not just here, the work has been stalled at many parts of the city. Only after we are given a no-objection certificate after the work is completed can the roads be laid,” he said.
Most of the commuters use the fifth avenue to escape the chaos at Anna Nagar roundtana, where vehicular movement is only at a snail’s pace due to the absence of traffic signals.
