Unit block fire covers Brisbane university campus in black smoke
A block of units has caught fire in an inner Brisbane suburb, causing black smoke to spread to the University of Queensland campus in St Lucia during students' final week of exams.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said they received a call at 12.10pm on Wednesday following reports a small block of units were on fire on Rosecliff Street, near a golf club at Highgate Hill.
"There are two crews are on scene with more on the way after reports of the low section of the building was alight," he said.
"The fire appears to have started in a garage where five cars have caught alight.
"There is black smoke travelling in the air but so far there are no reports of injuries."
The spokesman said there was no cause for alarm regarding the nearby university.
"We received a call from UQ asking what was going on but there is nothing to worry about, the university is not on fire," he said.
"I'm sure the students were hoping to skip their exams today and scare their teachers but there seems to be just black smoke around the area as crews work to control the fire at Highgate Hill."
More to come.
