The troubles between Vikki Campion's father and Barnaby Joyce appear to be over.

Retired firefighter Peter Campion delivered an extraordinary message to the former deputy prime minister earlier this year, suggesting he punch himself in the face.

The message came amid highly-publicised affair between Ms Campion and Mr Joyce.

But the birth of baby Sebastian in April has seen the family reconcile.

'Politics sure does make for strange bedfellows. We just never imagined our daughter would hop into one with a former Kiwi.

'Our future son-in-law should give himself an uppercut for failing to give one to the PM,' the statement read.

The pair settled their differences in September when Mr Campion was introduced to his newest grandson when Mr Joyce travelled to north Queensland to meet the entire family.

Mr Campion told the Northern Daily Leader this week he had been misquoted and their rift was not as bad as the media made it seem.

'Vikki's mother and I think that with Baaa-naby [sic] as dad the kid will probably be a perfect little lamb,' Mr Campion said in a statement (pictured is Mr Joyce on Wednesday)

'I was only p***ed with Barnaby in a very mild way because I'd made the effort when my wife was estranged from her father to go and sort that out, but he hadn't. But to be fair, he was busy. These things happen.'

Mr Campion had a strained relationship with his daughter at the time, which began before Mr Joyce was in the picture.

Mr Campion had earlier said he had not spoken to his daughter, a former journalist and Mr Joyce's media adviser, for years.

The highly-publicised affair between Mr Joyce and his then media adviser tore his family apart, but that seems to be on the mend as well.

Mr Joyce was spotted with two of his daughters in September. It was the first time they had been seen together since news of the affair broke.
