Rash driving proved fatal for three youngsters when their motorcycle rammed into a metro rail pillar in Mettuguda here in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police identified the victims as Vishaka Uday Reddy (20) and Nimmala Prudhvi Raj (20), both engineering students, and B. Uday (24), a B.Pharm graduate, all hailing from Thirumalagiri Mandal in Suryapet district.

Uday Reddy was pursuing second-year engineering in computer science from Scient Institute Of Technology, Ibrahimpatnam, and was a resident of Uppal, while B. Uday was studying mechanical engineering from JBIT in Moinabad.

Death was instant for the trio as the bike crashed into the pier pillar no. 9 (C1110) opposite HP petrol pump in Mettuguda at high speed. The bike was extensively damaged due to the impact.

Lalaguda inspector G. Srinivasu said the accident occurred around 1.30 a.m. when the trio was reportedly proceeding towards Secunderabad railway station from Uppal for dinner.

“There was a slight curve on the road and Prudhvi Raj, who was riding the vehicle at high speed, lost control and hit the metro pillar, resulting in severe head injuries to them and killing them on the spot,” he said adding the rider wasn’t wearing helmet.

The bike owned by Uday Reddy grazed past the median for a few metres before ramming the pillar.

“They were going at a speed of 100 kmph to 110 kmph,” police said.

Police also suspect Prudhvi Raj tried to overtake a four-wheeler from extreme right hand side and lost control of the vehicle. “There are no surveillance cameras around the accident spot. We are analysing video footage of CCTV cameras near Mettuguda junction and other areas prior to the accident,” police said.

After shifting the bodies to Gandhi Hospital morgue for autopsy, the police called up a Nagaram police constable, whose number was saved in one of the victims’ phones and asked him to inform their parents.

Soon, the parents of the trio rushed to Hyderabad only to see the shocking state of their children.

A case under 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code has been registered.
