Canola oil factory spectacularly explodes into flames as police investigate the suspicious blaze

A canola oil factory burst into flames early on Tuesday morning after it was intentionally set on fire, police allege. 

Video footage from 9 News shows thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the factory at Carrum Downs, in Melbourne’s south-east, at 1am.

'A factory shed on Boundary Road was completely engulfed by flames just before 1.30am,' a Victoria police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia.

'The fire is being treated as suspicious and Frankston Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating,' police said.

Officers said the shed was 'completely destroyed', with damages estimated at $100,000.

Firefighters were called to the scene and took more than 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Police are investigating.

An arson chemist will attend the scene on Tuesday afternoon.
