Sources close to the publication claim that the Shenzhen-based company will sell a 5G-ready smartphone at a starting price of 649 EUR (or approx Rs 53,023). This means that OnePlus plans to charge about 100 EUR (or approx Rs 8,171) more for a 5G-enabled smartphone compared to OnePlus 6T, which starts at 549 EUR (or approx Rs 44,861).
The increase in price shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. It is understandable that OnePlus’ 5G smartphone will be powered by the Snapdragon 8150 processor (or Snapdragon 855) paired with the Snapdragon X50 cellular modem. Given that OnePlus has invested a lot in the development of a 5G-ready phone, it is natural to expect an increase in the cost of the device.
OnePlus has already confirmed that it will be of the first few companies to offer a 5G-ready smartphone in the market in 2019. We still don’t know what OnePlus’ 5G smartphone will be called, but we do know that it will be launched sometime in the first half of next year. Speaking at a Qualcomm event in Hong Kong last month, the company’s co-founder Carl Pie confirmed that OnePlus will launch a 5G-enabled smartphone next month.
A report from CNET Spain, citing a close source, claims that OnePlus’ first 5G smartphone will be a part of a new series. The new smartphone will co-exist alongside the OnePlus 7, the successor to the OnePlus 6T. This means that OnePlus 7 will unlikely to get 5G support. Pie didn’t confirm the release date of a 5G-enabled smartphone, but rumor claims it might get announced at the 2019 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain.
