The police on Monday arrested an alleged shooter after a brief exchange of fire in Greater Noida.

Deepak Hapad (30), from Ranoli Latifpur Village, was carrying a reward of ₹25,000 on his head. They said he was wanted in over 20 cases of attempt to murder, robberies and petty crimes across National Capital Region.

At 4 a.m. on Monday, a police team was patrolling around Bisahda bypass road after they were informed about the movement of the accused in the area.

“Deepak and his accomplice Sonu were seen standing at the service road when the police officers tried to approach them. They immediately opened fire to which the officers fired in retaliation. One bullet hit Deepak in his right leg while his accomplice fled the spot on a bike,” said Station House Officer (Dadri) Ramsen Singh.

He was taken to district hospital in Noida, the officer said, adding that a countrymade pistol with four bullets was recovered from him.

“Deepak is an alleged member of the Sundar Bhati gang since 2010 where he assisted Ankit Gurjar, who is currently in jail. He used to extort money from the people,” Mr. Singh added.
