Volvo Stumps Us With Odd Teaser Campaign For LA Auto Show

A number of automakers have already introduced new vehicles ahead of their debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but Volvo is taking it slow by releasing a mysterious teaser image.

First noticed by Motor1, the image appears to show a backseat with a phone sitting on it. However, the display says “This is not a phone.”

This raises a number of questions, but it’s possible the device is a detachable tablet similar to the one offered on the BMW 7-Series. That remains unclear and we have some doubts about the idea given the device’s small size.

Volvo hasn’t said much about their plans for Los Angeles, but the show has previously said the automaker will use the event to introduce the S60 and V60 Cross Country. Furthermore, the show has said Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson is “slated to make significant announcements about the company’s progressive approach to transportation from its all-new display at AutoMobility LA.”

It appears the teaser could be a reference those plans as both of the company’s Facebook and Twitter posts were tagged with #FutureIsMobility. Of course, that’s not much to go on as the announcement could be focused on a smartphone app, a mobility service, autonomous driving efforts or something else entirely.

Volvo isn’t a stranger to releasing some unconventional apps as their Care by Volvo program allows users to join their car subscription service. Volvo bills it as a less than ten minute solution to getting a new car as users simply have to select which model they want, choose their options, enter their payment information and make a $500 deposit.
