Facebook Messenger appears to be testing a feature for watching videos simultaneously, as per a TechCrunch report. The feature, that is called Watch Videos Together, was spotted through Messenger codebase shared by Ananay Arora on Twitter. This could be introduced as an update to the ‘Watch Party’ feature on the main Facebook app.

Through the code for the feature, it appears that the new feature will allow users who are members of a Messenger group chat to be able to view content simultaneously. Once a video is shared on the Messenger chat, all users who are part of the chat will receive a ‘Tap to Watch Together’ prompt, as well as an option to ‘Chat about the same videos at the same time’.

As per the Messenger code that appeared online, users will be able to control the video, and also find out those who are watching.

With the latest code, Facebook could be considering plans to redirect links for its original video content. Currently, original content is viewed via the ‘Facebook Watch’ tab that appears on the News Feed. Recently, the ‘Facebook Stories’ menu was added on the top of the Messenger home screen.

The TechCrunch report quoted a Facebook executive as saying that the feature is part of an ‘internal test’. On previous occasions, though, tested features such as ‘sync contacts with Instagram’ were launched.

Through Facebook Watch, users can choose to create a ‘Watch Party’, through which users can create a group to view content, that is accompanied by a chat window on the side for comments. The new feature, though, is expected to introduce sponsored videos as well.
