Radical Liberal plan puts judges under the spotlight
Victorian judges will come under intense public scrutiny, with their courtroom performances published online, if Matthew Guy wins this Saturday's state election.
Details such as the sentencing records of judges and magistrates, court sitting times and the number of judgments overturned on appeal would be released quarterly under a radical plan by the Liberal Party to make judges more accountable.
The state's courts would also fall in the spotlight, with data to be published comparing sentencing and convictions at different courts.
The party says the plan, which would involve a revamped Judicial Commission, would encourage courts to better respond to community expectations.
It would also help members of the public find out exactly which sorts of decisions individual judges or magistrates are making.
Mr Guy said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews had protected judges from legitimate scrutiny and accountability.
"All Victorians must have complete confidence in our judges and our courts," he said.
"Almost every Victorian worker or small business person is held accountable daily for the job they do. Judges and magistrates should be no different."
