More than 2,000 people have been evacuated from a Sydney Westfield shopping centre after a fire erupted in the car park.

Firefighters are on the scene at the shopping precinct in Liverpool, in Sydney's south-west.

A spokesman from NSW Fire and Rescue told Daily Mail Australia three crews responded to the rubbish fire which broke out in the undercover car park attached to the shopping centre at 9:15am on Tuesday.

The evacuated shoppers were not able to return inside while crews worked to 'ventilate the area of smoke'

The blaze is now extinguished, but two crews are 'carrying out a salvage and overhaul' of the area.

The evacuated shoppers were not able to return inside while crews worked to 'ventilate the area of smoke,' the spokesman said.

But they have since been allowed back inside after over an hour of waiting.  

The shopping centre released a statement online apologising for the 'inconvenience'. 

'We apologise for the inconvenience experienced this morning during our centre evacuation.' 

'The pink level carpark remains closed, however the remainder of the centre has been declared safe, and has resumed for trade.' 

One shopper said the centre was a nightmare since reopening.

'It’s packed outside trying to get in the carpark, chaos out there,' she wrote.
