Truck driver charged over head-on collision that killed mother, son

A driver who was allegedly on drugs when his truck collided head-on with a young family driving home from dinner, killing a mother and her 12-year-old son, has been charged with 15 offences.

Ryan Wayne Kenny, 31, from Mooroopna was charged on Monday morning with offences including dangerous driving causing death, culpable driving and reckless conduct.

He was also charged with exceeding the prescribed concentration of drugs while driving, but police could not yet confirm what drugs he was taking at the time.

Amanda Kilmister, 37, and her son Harrison were killed in the November 2 crash in Brimin near Rutherglen, which also left her husband Paul in an induced coma.

Two of their other sons, Morgan, 2, and Austin, eight months, were taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with critical injuries. Their eldest son, Felix, 14, was not with them at the time of the crash.

Earlier this month, relatives of the Bundalong family said Morgan had been discharged from hospital and that baby Austin remained in hospital with a neck fracture and possible spinal injuries.

Mr Kilmister is now in a serious but stable condition in The Alfred hospital. Austin is in a stable condition at the Royal Children's.

Police have said the truck driver had been travelling on the wrong side of the road, and that it was his first shift for the company.

Ms Kilmister's brother Daniel Gwynne earlier said the family had been left devastated by the crash and were banding together to rally behind Paul and Austin in anticipation of "a long, difficult recovery".

Mr Gwynne said he hoped the truck driver was being supported by family.

The driver has been remanded in custody to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates Court on March 14 next year.

A GoFundMe campaign set up to support the family has so far raised about $26,000 of its $50,000 goal.
