Ditch the green tea and go for ‘adrak wali chai’: Rujuta Diwekar

Raise your hands if you cannot kickstart your day without a piping hot cup of your favourite beverage (read tea or coffee). Sadly, time and again, the first thing we are asked to ditch in order to tip the weighing scale in our favour is our beloved chai.

Those who are extremely health conscious have even swapped the Indian masala chai for green tea or green coffee. In recent years, green tea has gained popularity as a health drink. While several studies indicate that green tea has a lot of health benefits, Mumbai-based celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar thinks otherwise.

Rujuta shared a video on Instagram where she stressed that green tea is 'excellent' only for those who are in the business of selling green tea. For everybody else, it is the Indian masala tea with ginger, which will prove to be beneficial for your health, provide you with antioxidants and maintain your beauty.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s nutritionist had earlier debunked a lot of myths that prevailed regarding the consumption of tea and coffee. In a social media post, she mentioned that those who have switched to green tea/coffee need to know that these drinks (green tea/coffee) are only healthy 'for profits, not people.’ She also explained that our desi chai is now being considered as an anti-oxidant rich health drink that helps in aiding recovery.

Earlier, Rujuta had taken to Twitter to address two of the major doubts people usually have regarding the consumption of tea and coffee.

Chai/ coffee – to have or not to have

1. When not to have chai/coffee?
- First thing on waking up
- Last thing before sleeping
- In place of a meal during the day

2. How many cups a day?

- 2-3 cups are totally fine

It is a known fact that both green tea and green coffee have a huge market globally. In fact, green tea is often advertised as the ultimate solution for those looking to lose some weight.

Debunking the myth that green tea will help you slim down, Diwekar posted on her Facebook wall, “Sipping on green tea won't make you thin like the Chinese. Eating dinner early at 5.30 - 6 pm like them, will.”

So the next time you feel guilty about having your favourite adrak wali chai, remember that WHO recommends a maximum of 6 to 9 teaspoon of sugar per day.
