A young boy is fighting for life after he fell from his horse and was dragged along the ground.

The eight-year-old was riding the stallion near his family's rural property in the Tablelands, in far-north Queensland, on Sunday afternoon.

He spent the night in a critical condition after he was transported from the regional town to Townsville Hospital.

Paramedics were called to the property near Lake Eacham at about 2pm.

They found the boy bruised and battered after he fell from the horse and was 'dragged a distance', a Queensland Ambulance spokesperson told the Cairns Post on Sunday.
