The breadth of the market favoured the advances with 902 stocks advancing and 772 declining while 400 remained unchanged. On the BSE, 1219 stocks advanced, 1108 declined and 152 remained unchanged.
The Indian stock market in this afternoon session has managed to hold on to the morning gains ahead of the crucial RBI Board meet with the Nifty50 up 26 points, trading at 10,708 while the Sensex gained 122 points at 35,579.
Nifty realty was the outperforming sector led by Oberoi Realty, DLF, Indiabulls Real Estate, Sunteck Realty, Unitech and Phoenix Mills.
Nifty pharma gained close to a percent led by Dr Reddy's Labs, Sun Pharma and Aurobindo Pharma.
Metal stocks were also shining with gains from Hindalco Industries, JSPL, JSW Steel, NALCO and Tata Steel.
Selective FMCG names were also buzzing led by Dabur India, Godrej Industries, ITC and Marico.
From the auto space, the top gainers included Bosch, Tata Motors, Tata Motors DVR, Mahindra & Mahindra and Motherson Sumi Systems.
YES Bank jumped close to 6 percent while Bank of Baroda added 2 percent.
Reliance Industries from the oil & gas space added a percent while HPCL, BPCL, GAIL India and Indian Oil Corporation traded in the red.
From the BSE midcap space, the top gainers included ICICI Securities, Reliance Infra and Max Financial Services while the top losers were Motilal Oswal, Shriram City Union and Adani Power.
From the BSE smallcap space, the top gainers were 3i Infotech, Ashapura Minechem and CG Power. The top losers were Jet Airways, Indiabulls Integrated and Mercator.
The top gainers from NSE include YES Bank, Tata Motors, Hindalco Industries, Grasim Industries and Vedanta.
The top losers included GAIL India, Indiabulls Housing Finance, ONGC, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank.
The most active stocks were YES Bank, Jet Airways, Reliance Industries, Indiabulls Housing Finance and HDFC Bank.
Divi's Laboratories, NRB Bearing and Atul were some of the few stocks which hit new 52-week high on the NSE.
24 stocks have hit new 52-week low including names like Amtek Auto, Deepak Fertilizers, Empee Distilleries, Pincon Spirit, Rain Industries and Rane Holdings among others.
