A teenager has been rushed to hospital with significant injuries to his arm after he was attacked by a shark.

The 17-year-old was attacked while he was spearfishing from a boat off Nhulunbuy, around 970 kilometres east of Darwin, on Sunday.

He has been taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital, ABC reported. 

Police and paramedics rescued the boy from the water at 12pm, Craig Garraway from St John Ambulance said.

'Due to the significant injuries to his arm, they decided he would be best flown to Darwin for further treatment.'
