A teenage boy who was attacked by nearly a dozen sharks while spearfishing off the Northern Territory coast is recovering from 'deep lacerations' to his arm and leg.

The 17-year-old said he was 'mobbed' by the sharks while spearfishing from a boat about 30km offshore from Nhulunbuy on Sunday.

Despite suffering significant injuries, he is said to be in good spirits.

Emergency services were called around 10am on Sunday where the teenager was rescued from the water, Craig Garraway from St John Ambulance said.

He was treated on the scene before being taken to Nhulunbuy's Gove District Hospital.

The most severe wounds were inflicted to the boy's arms.

He was later airlifted to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition on Sunday afternoon.

'The young man explained to the CareFlight nurse that he had been mobbed by more than 10 sharks,' CareFlight spokesman David Wheeldon said.

Mr Wheeldon praised those on the boat and the first responders for their work on treating the teenager.

Craig Garraway from St John Ambulance also praised the efforts of those with the teenager before medical help arrived.

'I believe the people on the boat have done an amazing job to stem the bleeding and to give him first aid treatment prior to the arrival of paramedics,' he told ABC News.

However, Mr Garraway said shark attacks in the Northern Territory were rare.

'I've been around a long time and I'll be honest, I can't remember a shark attack,' he said.

The boy remains in a stable condition in hospital.

The attack comes one day after a man was bitten during a surf lesson in Gerroa, south of Sydney on Saturday.
