New Delhi: A two-year-old infant was kidnapped and raped near a railway track in north Delhi’s Kotwali early on Saturday. The girl, sleeping with her parents on the footpath, was gagged and taken away by a 24-year-old man. She was later found lying unconscious, naked and bleeding, near the tracks, and rushed to hospital. From there, she was referred to another hospital and operated upon. She was reported to be in a stable condition.
The suspect was arrested following a massive manhunt. The accused, Anil, had a criminal record and had been jailed earlier, police said. The girl’s parents said they were soundly asleep and didn’t realise when she was attacked. DCP Jasmeet Singh said the parents approached them at Kotwali police station and filed a missing report. “We immediately registered an FIR and formed several teams to find the girl,” Singh said.
A senior police officer said the infant’s father is a rickshaw puller and her mother a ragpicker. “When I woke up around 2.30am, my daughter was nowhere to be found. We searched frantically for her. We showed her picture to passers-by, but no one had seen her. We then approached the police,” the father said.
DCP Singh said CCTV footage from nearby areas was scanned to zero in on the accused. Meanwhile, information was received about a child being admitted to hospital in a critical condition and a team was rushed there. The girl’s parents positively identified her. Teams were sent to places of worship and shelter homes across the city in search of the accused, who was finally caught near a gurdwara.
Police said the accused was drunk when he kidnapped the girl. He told police that he had seen the girl sleep on the footpath earlier with her parents. After sexually assaulting her, he left her bleeding on the tracks.
