CHANDIGARH/JIND: Infighting within one of the powerful political families of the country - the Chautalas of Haryana - finally ended in a split within a month of the feud spilling out into the open just ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) patriarch O P Chautala's elder son Ajay announced his decision to form a separate political outfit while addressing a mammoth gathering in Jind on Saturday.

He said he was handing over the INLD and its symbol to his younger brother Abhay Chautala, the leader of opposition in the Haryana assembly. " Ye INLD aur Chasma (the party symbol) Billu ko Mubarak, mera azeez hai woh (I hereby handover this INLD and its symbol, spectacles to my brother Billu, aka Abhay. He is very close to my heart)," Ajay said as he gave up all claims on the INLD. Ajay said if he stakes claim to the INLD, it may lead to a long battle for which he is not prepared now.

He also said that he would submit the resignations of his supporters from the INLD to his father after returning to Tihar jail on November 20.

Ajay, a former MP, was convicted in the junior basic trained (JBT) teacher recruitment scam in 2013 along with his father and they were both awarded 10-year imprisonment. He was out on parole to celebrate Diwali with his family. His sons - Hisar MP Dushyant and party students' wing chief Digvijay - were earlier expelled from the INLD.
