Heavy rain disrupts power supply, traffic in the Nilgiris

Heavy rain that lashed the Nilgiris district brought down several trees, power and traffic disruption on Friday.

According to sources, a tree fell near Mission Compound disrupting power supply. Highways Department and Tangedco officials rushed to the spot to remove fallen tree, restore power supply and clear the road for traffic.

Thattapallam on Mettupalayam Road also witnessed landslide. The sources also said that tree fall was reported on Kothagiri-Kodanad Road, Sholar Mattam and Kaikatti. Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spots to remove the trees.

Kothagiri recorded 19mm rainfall in the 24 hours that ended 8 a.m. Saturday. Kodanad recorded 22 mm during the same period. The impact of the rain induced by Cyclone Gaja resulted in the water level in Amaravathy Reservoir rose by seven feet on Friday. The water level on Friday stood at 77.5 feet in the Reservoir with a full reservoir level of 90 feet. Good rain in the catchments resulted in the water level touching 84.55 feet.

In Coimbatore, Chinnakalar received the maximum rainfall – 70 mm on Friday, followed by Cincona at 63 mm, Valparai Taluk Office at 45 mm, Valparai PAP areas at 44 mm and Solaiyar at 33 mm. The city received only around six mm rainfall.
