Western Railway plans live-tracking app to curb thefts on long-distance trains

Mumbai: The Western Railway has planned to develop a live-tracking application, through which passengers travelling on long-distance trains can complain or provide details of their stolen luggage even as they are on the move. This move has been taken to reduce the cases of theft on long-distance trains. Currently, when the passenger has discovered the loss of their baggage, they must wait until the next station to lodge a complaint, by which time it is too late to investigate, as determining the exact location where the theft occurred is difficult.

Hence the need for this live-tracking app, which will be handled by the RPF, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE). The director general of the Railway Police Force (RPF), Arun Kumar, said, “In a ‘moving crime’, thieves enter the coaches when passengers are asleep. They set about their task and then vanish from the moving train. By the time the passenger realises their luggage is missing, the train has moved farther from the scene of the crime.” “The passenger can download our application and can lodge a complaint as soon as they get notice their baggage is missing.

This complaint will be sent to the concerned security agencies (RPF and GRP), who will then start tracking the case. “With the TTE’s information about the passenger’s ticket, we will try and resolve the case. The statement of the TTE will also be quickly recorded in the app if needed and pertains to the case — like who was sitting nearby at the time of the crime,” he explained.
