Zilla panchayat CEO Raja P. said on Thursday that action would be initiated against those officials who have skipped the monthly review meetings under Karnataka Development Programme.

He was addressing officials at a review meeting held at the zilla panchayat hall here on Thursday. As soon as the meeting began, Shivaraj Patil Raddewadgi, president of the ZP standing committee on Agriculture and Industry, and Shantappa Kudalgi, president of the standing committee on social justice, claimed that many officials have skipped meetings without prior permission.

“[They] have continued to remain absent. They have not responded to the notices served on them by higher-ups,” Mr. Raddewadgi saidd. In response, Mr. Raja said action would be initiated against the erring officials.

Officials of the National Rural Drinking Water Project (NRDWP) have identified 129 villages in the district which may face water shortage immediately, and have drawn up a contingency plan. The NRDWP will take up works such as maintenance on existing borewells and drilling of new borewells, apart from improving sources of water in 121 villages. Drinking water will be supplied in tankers to five villages.

Besides the 129 villages, 385 villages in the district may face acute water scarcity in the coming summer. The government has allocated ₹9.5 crore for this. Taluk-level task force committees have been formed and a sum of ₹50 lakh each sanctioned for six taluks – Afzalpur, Chincholli, Chitapur, Kalaburagi, Jewargi, and Sedam.
