SHRC orders police to pay penalty

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has recommended the State government to pay a compensation of ₹2.50 lakh to a man, who was erroneously arrested in connection with a case.

SHRC member A. Chittaranjan Mohandoss also recommended the State government to recover a sum of ₹1 lakh from Inspector E. Rajeswari and a sum ₹75,000 each from Special Sub-Inspector R. Balakrishnan and Head Constable K. Francis (all attached to Central Crime Branch then) involved in the case.

“The Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Home Department, Secretariat, Chennai shall take discretionary action against all the respondents,” the order stated.

On the defensive

M. Arunkumaran of South West Boag Road in T.Nagar in Chennai, was arrested in connection with a case on August 11, 2014.

He alleged that the police officers did not provide any identification.

The respondents denied all the allegations and claimed the arrest was made as per the law.

“This Commission carefully examined complaint, counter, depositions and all other records and it’s clear from the above that Mr. Arunkumaran faced humiliation and he was mishandled by the respondents has violated the basic human rights of the complainant,” it said.
