Bus commuters suffer as encroachments at Maharani theatre bus stop have forced them to move far from the boarding point

Commuters boarding Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses from Maharani theatre bus stop in Korukkupet have made a plea to the Chennai Traffic Police to take action against those parking their vehicles at the halting point.

The encroachment of the bus shelter has put the commuters to inconvenience as they have to wait at a stop a few metres away from the halting point.

A large number of commuters could be seen waiting on the steps of commercial establishments on the stretch and on pavements. Commuters complained that visitors to the shops often park their vehicles on the pavements as well as on the road.

The auto and share auto drivers compound their problems further.

“Share autosrickshaws ply up to Thiruvottiyur from here and the drivers halt their vehicles at the bus stop to woo passengers waiting for the buses. They don’t leave an inch of space for the buses to halt at the stopping point. What’s worse, even two-wheeler riders squeeze through the narrow passageway. We have no choice but to run between this maze of vehicles to board buses. More often, we end up missing the bus,” said S. Durga, a resident of Korukkupet.
