An Australian man was left with a broken jaw and blood pouring from his mouth after a violent dispute with a security guard at an Israeli airport.

Ben de Jong, 41, lived in Israel for five years with his wife and daughter before the incident, which left him hospitalised.

A statement from Tel Aviv airport said Mr De Jong 'failed to identify himself to an airport security official,' 7News reported.

Mr De Jong was rushed into emergency surgery where he said they had to 'put his jaw back into place' after the incident.

Footage of the aftermath of surgery showed the victim's face covered in blood, bruised and unable to speak properly.

Social media users were quick to question the information Mr De Jong provided, though, with one writing 'there is definitely more to the story'.

'Clearly anywhere in the world, even here in Australia, if you are asked to identify yourself by police or security you must comply.'

'Israel is under constant attack and to refuse to ID yourself in that environment is seriously stupid.'

'It would be great to see the full video and voice recording,' another wrote.
