CHANDIGARH: Thieves struck at a temple in Sector 27 and escaped with donation box cash on Wednesday night.
Vinod Kumar, a priest at Sati Temple, said in his police complaint, "I closed the temple around 10pm on Wednesday. The next day around 9am when I opened its doors, I found the locks of the donation box broken and the shrine ransacked. Save the cash, nothing else was missing."

The thieves gained entry from the rooftop. "The goons broke open the tin shed to enter the premises," he added.

Kumar called up the police and the temple officials. Police said there were no CCTV cameras in the temple. "We are scrutinizing the footage of CCTV cameras installed near the shrine. The priest said he was not certain about the exact amount of cash in the donation box," a cop added.

A case has been registered. On June 28, two masked men had broken into a temple in Sector 15 and stolen cash from the donation box. The Sector 11 police are yet to solve the case.

The Sector 26 police in April had claimed to have solved five temple theft cases with the arrest of a gang of thieves. The gang had struck at temples in sectors 16, 24, 27 and Saketri. Silver ornaments weighing around 12 kg were recovered from the possession of three of its members.
