C. Subbulakshmi, UGC-Assistant Professor in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular biology of Pondicherry University has received the best research award by European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).

RNA research

The award was presented during a recent symposium on, ‘From synapse to memory: RNA based regulatory mechanisms’ organised by National Brain Research Centre, Manesar. Pondicherry University Vice Chancellor Prof. Gurmeet Singh felicitated the awardee on the achievement.

Ms. Subbulakshmi had been appointed as an assistant professor by University Grants Commission of India through Faculty Recharge Program (UGC-FRP) after receiving her PhD from the University of Goettingen, Germany and postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA and University of Toronto, Canada.

She has obtained research grants from various funding agencies and has set up ‘sensory neural engineering and cell therapeutics lab’ to study the causes of human blindness occurring due to neuronal defects in the retina. Her recent findings shed light on the understanding of disease progression in diabetic retinopathy patients.

The EMBO award will sponsor Dr. C. Subbulakshmi to attend an event organized by Eurpoean Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg, Germany, a University press note said.

She is also a recipient of the Max Planck Society Visiting Fellowship which supports her research stays at Max Planck Institute, Goettingen, Germany from 2014. In addition, she was earlier awarded Japanese Society for Promotion of Science Fellowship to learn advanced microscopy techniques at Hokkaido University, Japan.
