Mr Rattle was strangled to death using a nylon dog leash after his partner struck him over the head with a fry pan during a heated exchange.

The court heard O'Neill was exhausted after preparing for a high-society event the couple were hosting, and snapped after Mr Rattle called him a 'frigid b**ch' for refusing sex.

The pair, who lived a life of luxury in their almost two decades together, had noticed cracks in their relationship forming, news.com.au reported.

Mr Rattle, who was described by family as a generous, enthusiastic, talented perfectionist, was also known to have a darker side; and was both controlling and domineering.

He often belittled O'Neill in public and private, and friends of the couple acknowledged family violence within the relationship.

O'Neill went about his daily activities as best he could after the death of his partner, before returning to the home three days later to set fire to the apartment.

Mr Rattle's charred body was discovered in the blaze, but within a week, O'Neill was arrested and confessed to the crime.

He was sentenced to 17 years in jail with a non-parole period of 13 years in February 2015, with an additional two years added to the sentence for arson.
