Seven persons were sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court in Barrackpore for allegedly murdering a Kolkata Police constable in 2012.
The accused had allegedly beaten up the 36-year-old cop, Asim Dam, after he thwarted a molestation bid on his 19-year-old niece.
The seven accused are Avijit Ghosh, Biswajit Ghosh, Debu Mukherjee, Pintu Majumdar, Kuntal Chakraborty, Prasenjit Dutta and Tapas Chandra. The eighth accused, Jabbar Ghosh, is still absconding.
On the evening of March 12, 2012, the group of drunken youths allegedly tried to molest Dam’s niece near her residence at Bisharpara in North 24 Parganas. After Dam intervened, they fled. But soon they returned with sharp weapons and hockey sticks and assaulted the constable. A critically injured Dam died three days after the incident at a local hospital.
“These seven persons killed my uncle and virtually ruined our family. I wanted to see them hanged,” the niece said.
