CHANDIGARH: Panic gripped Sector 22-B market after two groups came to blows and opened fire following a road rage incident early on Thursday.
Police said six youths had gone to a club in Sector 7 for a birthday party. "After the party, the youths -who were in two cars - were going to ISBT, Sector 17, for dinner around 1.30am when one of the cars hit a parked Uber cab while reversing," said a cop.
As the cars sped away, the Uber cab driver chased them and intercepted them at Sector 22. "The cab driver and the youths started quarrelling and manhandling each other. As tempers frayed, three passengers of the cab came out and got into the fight. One of the passengers then took out a pistol and fired a shot. Soon after the firing, the cab occupants sped away," the cop added.
After receiving a complaint, Sector 17 police booked the six youths - Vaneet, Gautam, Ranbir, Anirudh, Gurkirat Singh, Harmanpreet Singh -under preventive measures and sections 107, 151 of the CrPC. Police have impounded both the cars.
DSP Pawan Kumar said, "The cab driver and the passengers will be arrested soon. We are scrutinizing the footage of the CCTV cameras."
An eyewitness, Pankaj Kumar, who recorded the incident on his phone, said, "The cab passengers picked up a brick and a manhole cover and hurled those at the youths. As tension increased, one of them took out a pistol and fired a shot at the youths."
Pankaj called up the police. By the time Sector 17 police reached the spot, all of the wranglers had fled. Pankaj gave the video footage to the police, who recovered a bullet shell from the spot. Cops said they have not received any formal complaint, but on the statement of Sector 22 resident Pankaj, they have registered the case under the IPC and the Arms Act.
