- It's not the first time the star has raised eyebrows over her views on public figures, having taken aim at Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande in the past
Bette Midler is facing furious backlash on social media, after taking a swipe at US First Lady Melania Trump, during which she made a crude comment about her body.
The 72-year-old singer and actress took to Twitter on Thursday with an offensive hashtag alongside a shot the Slovenia-born former model, 48, took for a 2000 British GQ spread, in which she displayed liberal amounts of flesh in a metallic swimsuit.
Veteran entertainer Midler put a spin on the eye-catching snapshot, writing, 'The dry cleaning bill for the upholstery on Air Force One must be insane. #FLOT*TS.'

Controversial: Bette Midler, 72, took to Twitter on Thursday with a vulgar hashtag alongside a shot Melania Trump took for a 2000 British GQ spread in a futuristic metallic swimsuit
The punchline drew a litany of negative responses from people of both political affiliations, as they responded with strong objections to her jibes.
One user who identified as a 'liberal feminist' told the Grammy winner that Melania's past modeling work 'should NOT matter' when it comes to contemporary political issues involving her and her husband, President Donald Trump.
'I am tired of seeing people denounce her for having been a nude model, which has nothing to do with her FLOTUS work nor her involvement in this administration. Stay on message!' the user told Midler.

Feedback: Many Twitter users complained of the nature behind Midler's tweet

Mixed bag: Not everyone was put off by Midler's tweet, as one user said it endeared him to the entertainer
Another user echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that Midler was out of line in her criticism of Melania's past work,
'Now you've moved on to body Shaming? You? Honestly?' the user wrote. 'Is this what you want your daughter to be like as well. Teach her that if you disagree Politically that all bets are off when it comes to how you are as a human being? #Shameful.'
One user said Bette's razor sharp words had sullied a reputation built on decades of work in show business.
'I loved you for years,' the user wrote. 'Loved you in Beaches and Hocus Pocus. Now I'm done. I'm so sorry you have done this. This has nothing to do with politics. It's just wrong.'
Not everyone was put off by Midler's tweet, as one user wrote, 'I just love you 1,000 times more for this !!!!! Thank you queen!!!'

Grace under fire: Melania was at an event in the nation's capital Thursday to talk about cyberbullying and online civility
The star is known for being decidedly outspoken and has regularly used her social media account to share her thoughts on other public figures.
And in March 2016, she joined a host of critics – including Piers Morgan and Chloe Moretz – when she mocked Kim Kardashian for posing a nude snapshot online.
Taking to Twitter, the veteran performer wrote: 'Kim Kardashian tweeted a nude selfie today. If Kim wants us to see a part of her we've never seen, she's gonna have to swallow the camera.'
However, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star opted against staying silent once she caught wind of the jab, writing back: 'Hey @BetteMidler I know it's past your bedtime but if you're still up and reading this send nudes #justkidding.'
Not content with leaving things there, the mother-of-three added: 'Hey @BetteMidler I really didn't want to bring up how you sent me a gift awhile back trying to be a fake friend then come at me #dejavu.'

Outspoken critic: Bette is an outspoken critic of Melania's husband US President Donald Trump
Two years beforehand, she took aim at pop sensation Ariana Grande when, in an interview with the Telegraph, she said of the singer: 'You don’t have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead.'
The No More Tears Left To Cry took a respectful tone when she responded to Bette's comments, writing on Twitter: 'Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgement!
'not sure where that Bette went but i want that sexy mermaid back!!! always a fan no matter what my love.' [sic]
Accepting the proverbial extended olive branch, Midler responded: 'About my screed on @arianagrande, all I can say is, "Spoken like a reformed old whore!"'
She added: 'Yes, it’s my birthday! And my birthday wish is that @ArianaGrande forgives me soon and let’s me direct her next video…'

And last month, Bette caused quite the uproar when she quoted a 49-year-old John Lennon and Yoko Ono quote that read: 'women are the N-word of the world'.
Taking back to Twitter to later apologise, Bette said she didn't think her words through and was 'infuriated' at the time with investigation to sexual assault allegations levelled at then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
'The too brief investigation of allegations against Kavanaugh infuriated me,' she began her apology tweet.
'Angrily I tweeted w/o thinking my choice of words would be engraving to black women who doubly suffer, both by being women and by being black.'
Bette continued: 'I am an ally and stand with you; always have. And I apologize.'
The veteran actress' apology comes after she tweeted out 'women are the n-word of the world' on Thursday, in an attempt to make the point that females were oppressed.

Laying bare her thoughts: In March 2016, she joined a host of critics – including Piers Morgan and Chloe Moretz – when she mocked Kim Kardashian for posing a nude snapshot online
'"Women are the n-word of the world",' she began. 'Raped, beaten, enslaves, married off, worked like dumb animals; denied education and inheritance; enduring pain and danger of childbirth and life IN SILENCE for THOUSANDS of years They are the most disrespected creatures on earth.'
'Woman Is the N****r of the World' eventually became a song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, from their 1972 album Some Time in New York City, three years after she coined the phrase in a Nova Magazine interview.
It also caused controversy when it was originally released, although the former Beatle tried to explain at the time their use of the n-word referred to any oppressed person.
Some defended Midler insisting she was not the originator of the quote, but they were drowned out.

Uproar: Last month, Bette caused quite the uproar when she quoted a 49-year-old John Lennon and Yoko Ono quote that read, 'women are the N-word of the world'
Melania's past modeling pics had previously made headlines during the 2016 presidential campaign.
In March of that year, a super PAC supporting Trump's chief rival for the Republican nomination, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, released in predominantly-Mormon areas ad that read, 'Meet Melania Trump, Your Next First Lady' next to another risqué shot from the GQ set.
Trump was quick to shoot back with threats he would unearth secrets about Cruz's wife, Heidi, tweeting: 'Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!'
Trump has taken digs at Midler in the past as well, writing in 2012: 'Now grotesque @BetteMidler is into the Trump act --- trying to become relevant again.'
He also wrote: 'While @BetteMidler is an extremely unattractive woman, I refuse to say that because I always insist on being politically correct.'

Awkward: Bette apologized last month for her 'women are the N-word of the world' tweet, revealing she was 'infuriated' and not thinking straight with the Brett Kavanaugh case
