Residents of KAMPERS, Perumbakkam, have requested the State Highways Department to widen stormwater drains at Shanthi Nagar, Perumbakkam. More than 5,000 residential houses from areas including Kailash Nagar, Mookambigai Nagar, Perumal Nagar, Rathinam Nagar, Sairam Nagar, Shanthi Nagar, Gurudev Colony, Indira Priyadarshini Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Prabhu Nagar and Anandammal Nagar are part of the KAMPERS residents welfare association. The stormwater drain, which is constructed on Sholinganallur-Medavakkam-Perumbakkam Road, is supposed to drain excess rainwater to an underground culvert that in turn carries the rainwater to Bay of Bengal, via Pallikaranai Marshlands and Okkiyam Maduvu. Last year, during monsoon, the drain was deepened and widened for about a feet to drain excess rainwater from KAMPERS. Due to the recent showers, the premises of KAMPERS remains waterlogged.
“ As a temporary measure, the stormwater drain at Shanthi Nagar should be deepened and widened and an additional opening must be facilitated. Besides, openings in stormwater drains at Kailash Nagar and Anthony Nagar should be created,” says K. Sarangadass, president, KAMPERS Welfare Association, Perumbakkam.
Residents request the Perumbakkam town panchayat officials to take steps to levy fine against erring residents who discharge sewage in the open. “ A few residents of Kailash Nagar discharge sewage illegally from their home septic tanks into the vacant plots and on streets. Instead, they should call the jet-rodding machines and clear the blocks at the septic tanks. The stretches and the vacant plots acts as as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, posing a health hazard to residents, especially children and senior citizens,” he adds.
