The Assembly was adjourned on Friday after obituary references were made to several prominent political leaders including former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee and former Leader of the Opposition Pankaj Bandyopadhyay.
Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee read out the obituary references of Somnath Chatterjee, Pankaj Bandyopadh- yay and others who passed away in the past few months.
Chatterjee, a ten-time Lok Sabha MP, passed away in August. A founding member of the ruling Trinamool Congress, Bandyopadhyay passed away in October.
He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly from 2001-2006. CPM MLA Sujan Chakraborty, meanwhile, criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not attending the Assembly when obituary references were read.
“She did not get the time to attend the Assembly session, yet she had the time to attend her party meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium which is just a stone’s throw away from the Assembly. This is very unfortunate,” Chakraborty said.
