How the survey was conducted

The study was done on two different batches of participants. Hall, along with his colleagues, developed an online tool to analyse the relationship people shared with their friends. Firstly, he surveyed 355 adults who had moved to a new place and were looking to make new friends. In the second batch, he asked 112 first year college students to pick two new friends and tracked their relationship for around nine weeks.

The study concluded that one takes 40 to 60 hours to become a casual friend with someone and 80 to 100 hours to turn friends. Interestingly, it takes 200 hours to become close friends.

The study also suggested that it is easier for younger people to make friends. However, this does not mean they take less time to know someone better. It is probably because they tend to spend time with their friends on regular basis.

Hall suggested that the key to becoming good friends is spending time with them. “If you are interested in a friendship, switch up the context. If you work together, go to lunch or out for a drink. These things signal to people that you are interested in being friends with them," opined the researcher.
