MUMBAI: In a first for the country, Uber has introduced a "fuel price index" in Mumbai. It means that driver earnings will hinge on changes in fuel price in the city. This comes at a time when driver partners of Ola and Uber have threatened a second round of strike from Saturday and a morcha on Monday.
A senior Uber official told TOI that this is in the "interest" of driver partners. "One of their demands was to link fares to rising fuel prices. Recent fuel price surge has impacted net earnings of independent driver partners on Uber platform. In this context, we have introduced a national fuel price index, which will ensure that driver earnings are correlated with fuel price hikes. Mumbai is the first city where we rolled it out on Thursday."
The official said that it may increase drivers' gross earnings by Re 1 per km. "For those driving about 8 hours a day, it is estimated to translate into an increase of Rs 2,000-2,200 a month."
Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh on Thursday issued an ultimatum to Ola and Uber firms to redress all grievances of drivers by Saturday. "If not, drivers will protest voluntarily from November 17," said union leader Sachin Ahir.
He said when the last strike ended, the union was assured of a solution by November 15.
