Elon Musk has been tussling with regulators lately, but he has a new worry that's not the SEC: Mexico's Tequila Regulatory Council.
On Oct.
12, he tweeted "Teslaquila coming soon" with a photo of a bottle of something claiming to be an agave-based spirit.
Tesla has filed an application to trademark "Teslaquila." But those who decide what is and what isn't tequila say: not so fast.
The council argued that the "name 'Teslaquila' evokes the word Tequila ... (and) Tequila is a protected word." Musk, they say, must abide by the strict rules of origin for the spirit, which dictate it must be made in the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit or Tamaulipas, among other requirements.
Tesla did not respond to several requests for comment.
